How to Lose Weight After Pregnancy

It’s natural and healthy for women to gain weight during pregnancy but after having a baby new mothers want to get back their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Although you may want to fit back into your old jeans as soon as possible it’s not safe or healthy to try and lose baby weight too quickly.

Below are some tips and advice on how to lose weight after pregnancy:

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding not only helps a mother and her baby bond together but it is also a good way to lose some weight after pregnancy.  It takes about 200 to 500 extra calories to breastfeed a baby, making this an ideal and easy way to lose calories.

Breastfeeding also stimulates the release of oxytocin, a hormone that causes the uterus to contract and shrink back to its original size.  This will help you get back in shape faster.

Try Not To Diet

Having a baby is stressful enough and you do not want to add more stress by dieting.  Don’t deprive yourself of your favorite foods otherwise you may actually end up gaining weight.  Instead, eat healthy and nutritious foods.  You need extra energy and calories to take care of your baby.

This is true especially if you are breastfeeding.  Keep a variety of nutritious foods such as wheat crackers, apples and carrot sticks in the house so you’ll have something good to snack on when you feel hungry.  When it comes to food your focus should be on nutrition, not weight loss.

Go For A Walk

Listen to your body and when you feel able to, go for a walk.  Walking is one of the best exercises for new moms who want to lose weight after pregnancy.

All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and fine weather.  Start with about 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week.  Gradually increase the time as you gain strength.

Exercise

Exercise offers many benefits after having a baby.  It will help you lose extra weight after your pregnancy.  Exercise also makes you feel good and helps alleviate post-partum depression.  Unlike dieting, exercise will not interfere with breastfeeding.

It’s a good idea to start slowly after giving birth.  In general you may have to wait 4 to 6 weeks after a normal vaginal birth and 8 weeks after a c-section before starting to exercise.  Be sure to get your doctor’s okay.

Start with low impact cardio exercises such as walking, yoga, swimming, or working out on an elliptical trainer.  Walking while pushing a stroller will help you burn more calories so you can lose weight after pregnancy much faster.

In addition to cardio workouts you must also do exercises to strengthen your core.  Pregnancy can weaken your abs and pelvic floor.  Once your doctor has cleared you for exercise, you can start working on your abs muscles and pelvis.

You can do crunches, pelvic tilts, ball crunches, Kegel crunches, back extensions and other core strength exercises.  Your abs will need some “babying” as they may have weakened during pregnancy.

Final Advice

Weight gain always comes with pregnancy and it’s healthy for you and the baby.  When you’re trying to lose weight after pregnancy, be kind to yourself but avoid junk food and “celebrity” diets.

A healthy, balanced diet along with exercise is the best way to get your body back in shape.
